Getting off the ketogenic diet
The diet below is simply for rapid and effective weight loss and uses a 1 to 1 fat to protein ratio rather than the 4 to 1 fat to combined protein and carbs ratio of the Ketogenic Diet pioneered by Johns Hopkins used to treat epilepsy. To compare, normal Americans eat anywhere from 200 to 400 grams of carbs a day. If I could eat dairy, I probably would, and I think this meal looks amazing. Insulin also prevents your fat cells from breaking down those triglycerides back into fatty acids and releasing them into your blood stream for use as energy. Other diets like the South Beach Diet are also only effective because of the reduction in carbs and consequently insulin levels. When you eat carbs your blood glucose level is raised and your pancreas secretes insulin. However, while one whole avocado contains 322 calories and 29 grams of fat, it also houses 18 grams of carbohydrates. One other interesting point came about when I was trying to think of all the fatty Paleo foods I could include. When you are in ketosis, your body is using ketones more than it normally would for energy. The Ketogenic diet has always lived on the fringes of diet lore and has been seen as extreme. So a ketogenic diet is high fat, low(ish) protein, and very low carb. This is important: Insulin both causes fat absorption and prevents fat from being used as energy. If you were to eat sugary snacks throughout the day you are keeping your insulin level high which constantly keeps your fat cells in a state of absorption and prevents the release of fat and its use as energy. The fact is that you can lose a lot of weight eating a ketogenic diet. I got to thinking what a ketogenic Paleo diet might look like. First a summary of the science behind the Ketogenic Diet.

Note: Please note that if you are interested in a Ketogenic Diet used to treat Epilepsy or Pediatric Epilepsy, please start at Johns Hopkins who are the pioneers in this field. Too many ketones are not a good thing, but you can mitigate and monitor that on a healthy ketogenic diet. But the reality is that the low glycemic index diet (Low GI Diet) is effective because it is close to, but not quite, a ketogenic diet. These people would fuel up with coconut butter instead of Powerade, and their bodies would get very good at using fat instead of glucose as fuel, as would yours if you ate a ketogenic diet for a while. Just as a comparison to someone on a non-low-carb Paleo diet. Of course avocado came up on my list, as well as lard, bacon fat, tallow, fatty meats, coconut oil, coconut milk, olive oil, and nuts. I am neither a doctor nor self proclaimed nutrition expert so please consult your doctor before starting any diet or taking any action that affects your health and wellbeing. Jimmy says he gets around 82% fat, 3% carbs, and 15% protein, so I tried to mimic that in my imaginary ketogenic diet for a day. The wikipedia page for the Ketogenic Diet diet also has information on the diet as it relates to treating epilepsy. Jimmy Moore is dropping weight with the fervor of a college wrestler right now on his experimental ketogenic diet. Your fat cells store away the glucose as triglycerides. Studies have shown that you can even train endurance activities at an elite level on a ketogenic diet. It may be fewer than that to get into a deep state of ketosis, and you must not eat too much protein either. Some say you need to eat fewer than 30 grams of carbs per day to be in ketosis. Jimmy uses the home blood tests to check his ketone levels in his blood, which seem to be more accurate than the urine tests. Update: I did a (failed) ketosis experiment on myself that you can read about here, here, here, and here. So below is what it would look like on a 2,000 calorie diet.
